May 23-27

We had another great week in Room 15!

Important reminders:

  • Please remember to send your child to school with a water bottle every day! More and more students are forgetting to bring them and we want to make sure everyone stays hydrated, especially because the weather is warming up.
  • We are so excited to have our Leighton Centre field trip this TUESDAY! We will be leaving the school right after attendance at 8:30am and returning at 2:15pm. Be sure to get to school ON TIME in the morning. Most of this off-site experience will be OUTSIDE. Students must be in uniform and dressed for the weather!
  • We are going bowling on June 8th and 9th! We will be walking up the street from the school to Toppler Bowl. Watch for permission slips going home this week and return them signed ASAP.

Reading- Students are working on answering questions based on texts they're reading. Whether it's retelling a fiction story, re-calling facts about non-fiction, or making connections between the text and their life and previous experiences, comprehension is a vital component of learning to read. Be sure to ask your child questions about the books they're reading on their own!

Writing- We have been working on developing a complete climbing story. This includes a great beginning, which describes the character and the setting, a main event with a problem, two attempts to solve the problem that do not work, a solution that does work, and a satisfying ending. We are practicing writing endings in isolation based on a book or animated short, as well as building writing stamina to complete an entire piece.

Math- This week students have practiced their subtractions, 2-step word problems, and finished a measurement project! They are busy trying to reach their mad minute addition and subtraction goals. When they reach 500 collective addition questions right, students have requested a movie! When they reach 280 collective subtraction questions correct, they have requested time to play Prodigy on the computers. We are close to reaching both our goals. Any additional fluency practice helps!

Science- We had an AMAZING time during our Teacher's Pet "Buoyancy & Boats" in-school field trip. Thank you to the 5 parents who volunteered their time to make this experience a success. Students were thrilled to be able to make their own self-propelling boat out of wood, experiment with which items will sink or float, learn about keels, and navigate balancing cargo on various types of "boats."

Social- Students finished up their projects on a famous Albertan. This week, they will start looking into the natural resources, goods, and services of Calgary as we explore more about the community around us.

Character- Room 15 students worked on their leadership skills this week when meeting up with their Kindergarten buddies in Ms. Blue's class. They paired up with their buddy and asked them questions to get to know them better. We love our buddies!
